A "Working" Viking ship.

The ship is a "working" ship because of the way that it was constructed. It was built for heavy weather and for hauling cargo. A heavy duty mast and the amount of freeboard above the oar holes are clues that it was to be used in heavy weather. Imagine sailing from Norway to the USA in one of these!! People did. In the 1990s. People sailed from Norway to Chicago. to show that it could be done.
